Product Details
Silicon is an important element with a variety of physical and chemical properties.
· Physical properties: Silicon has two allotropes: amorphous silicon and crystalline silicon. Crystalline silicon is gray-black, with a density of 2.32-2.34 g/cm³, a melting point of 1410 ℃, and a boiling point of 2355 ℃. It is an atomic crystal, insoluble in water, nitric acid, and hydrochloric acid, but soluble in hydrofluoric acid and alkali. Silicon has a hardness of 6.5, belongs to a metalloid, is located in the p zone of the periodic table, and has common valences of -4 and +4. Silicon is very abundant in the earth's crust, accounting for 25.7%.
· Chemical properties: The atomic number of silicon is 14, and the atomic weight is 28.085. Its electronic configuration is 1s²2s²2p⁶3s²3p², and the atomic valence is mainly 4, followed by 2. The isotopes of silicon in nature and their proportions are: 28Si is 92.23%, 29Si is 4.67%, and 30Si is 3.10%. The atoms in silicon crystals are covalently bonded and have regular tetrahedral crystallographic characteristics. Under normal pressure, silicon crystals have a diamond-type structure with a lattice constant of a=0.5430nm.
· Electrical properties: The conductivity of silicon is closely related to its temperature. As the temperature rises, the conductivity increases, reaching a maximum at around 1480℃, and then decreases with the increase of temperature after the temperature exceeds 1600℃. The conductivity of silicon wafers can range from 10^-3 S/cm (N type) to 10^3 S/cm (P type). In terms of carrier mobility, the mobility of P-type silicon is about 450 cm²/V·s, while the mobility of N-type silicon is about 1500 cm²/V·s.
· Thermal properties: The thermal conductivity of silicon is about 150 W/(m·K) at room temperature, which is very beneficial for heat dissipation, which is crucial to keep the operating temperature of the chip within a safe range.
In summary, silicon is widely used in the electronics industry due to its unique physical, chemical and electrical properties, and is the basic material for electronic devices.
